A leading KZN
metal recycler

Located in Westmead, a thriving economic hub within the greater Durban area, Industrial Scrap Metals has been purchasing, collecting, processing and recycling both ferrous and non-ferrous metals for over four decades.

Our three facilities in Swanfield Road process metal ethically sourced from manufacturers, businesses, workshops, demolition sites, individuals and other scrap metal dealers. We’re paid to contribute to a greener economy returning increasingly scarcer metals back into the consumer and manufacturing sectors. ISM processes in excess of 36,000 tons of ferrous and 4000 tons of non-ferrous per annum and sell to both local and international consumers of scrap metals.

Frequently Asked Questions

Still need help? Speak to us.

How much is my scrap worth?
  • The type of metal: Different metals have different values (e.g., copper is worth more than steel).
  • The current market price: Like any commodity, metal prices fluctuate.
  • The quality of your scrap: Clean, uncontaminated metal is worth more.
  • The quantity you have: Larger amounts may qualify for better pricing.

We can give you a rough estimate over the phone, but for the most accurate price, it’s best to bring in a sample or your scrap so we can assess it properly. When you come in, we’ll weigh your scrap right in front of you and explain how different grades are priced.

Our priority is to ensure you receive a fair price for your scrap metal. We use state-of-the-art, calibrated scales for precise measurements, and our team is always available to answer any questions you may have about the valuation process.

Recycling your scrap metal is more than just good for the environment – it’s a smart choice with numerous benefits:

Environmental Impact:

  • Conserves natural resources: Mining for new metals is energy-intensive and can disrupt ecosystems. Recycling reduces the need for mining, preserving valuable resources like iron ore and limiting habitat destruction.
  • Saves energy: Producing metal from recycled materials uses significantly less energy than starting from raw materials. This lowers greenhouse gas emissions and helps combat climate change.
  • Reduces landfill waste: Metal takes a long time to decompose in landfills. Recycling keeps it out of landfills, reducing pollution and saving space.

Economic Benefits:

  • Supports local jobs: The scrap metal recycling industry creates jobs in collection, processing, and manufacturing.
  • Boosts the economy: Recycling metal contributes to a circular economy, keeping materials in use and reducing reliance on imports.
  • Puts money in your pocket: Many scrap yards pay for your metal, providing a financial incentive for recycling.

Beyond these benefits:

  • Metal is infinitely recyclable: Unlike many materials, metal can be recycled repeatedly without losing quality. This means it can be used to create new products over and over again.
  • Reduces pollution: Recycling metal reduces air and water pollution associated with mining and metal production.

To help us serve you better and ensure a smooth transaction, please bring the following when you visit:

  • Your ID card: This helps us with record-keeping and ensures accurate payments.
  • Proof of address: A utility bill or official document showing your current address.
  • Your telephone number: We may need to contact you with updates about your scrap metal.

If you’re dropping off scrap on behalf of a company:

Please bring a letter on company letterhead stating that you are authorised to dispose of the scrap metal. This helps us maintain accurate records and comply with industry regulations.

We appreciate your cooperation in helping us maintain efficient and reliable service for all our customers.

No. Where gas bottles are marked with supplier identification please return them to the supplier. If there are no markings the bottle will have to be cut into 2 pieces prior to entering our yards.

We gladly accept metal shavings, but to ensure you get the best price, it’s important to understand how their quality affects their value.

Why Cleanliness Matters:

Metal shavings are often mixed with other materials that reduce their value, such as:

  • Steel shavings: These are less valuable than other metals like aluminium or copper.
  • General waste: Items like rags, cigarette butts, and packaging contaminate the load.
  • Coolant and other liquids: These can add weight and make processing more difficult.

Maximise Your Return:

By taking a few simple steps, you can increase the value of your metal shavings:

  • Separate different metals: If possible, keep different types of shavings separate (e.g., aluminium, copper, brass).
  • Remove contaminants: Use a magnet to remove steel shavings and try to clear out any obvious debris.
  • Keep shavings dry: Avoid mixing shavings with liquids or allowing them to get wet.

Our truck drivers are given a list of customers to collect from for each day. They can get delayed in traffic, and at premises waiting for their turn to collect the scrap. Some days do not work out as planned. Please phone us if you have any questions to the time of the pick-up.

We follow all our trucks on tracker, and are in communication with the drivers, so any questions can be answered quickly. Remember we are a owner managed company so we will make a plan.

Here’s a list of things you should never put in a metal scrap skip:

Hazardous Waste:

  • Asbestos: This is a dangerous material that requires specialist removal and disposal.
  • Chemicals: Paints, solvents, oils, pesticides – these can contaminate the environment and pose risks to workers.
  • Batteries: Car batteries, household batteries, etc., contain harmful chemicals and need to be recycled separately.
  • Gas cylinders: These can be extremely dangerous and should never be disposed of in a skip.

Other Prohibited Items:

  • Electronics: TVs, computers, monitors, and other e-waste contain hazardous components and need to be recycled at designated facilities.
  • Tires: These require specialised recycling and can’t be processed with metal scrap.
  • Large appliances: Fridges, freezers, washing machines often contain hazardous materials and need to be disposed of separately.
  • General waste: Household garbage, food waste, and other non-metallic items don’t belong in a scrap metal skip.
  • Sealed containers: Never throw in closed containers, as they could contain hazardous materials.
